Imphal, December 10 2024:
The internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking shelter in the relief camp set up at Ideal Girls' College in Akampat, in Thongju assembly constituency, are facing shortage of water, in addition to other challenges amid the ongoing crisis.
The relief camp currently houses total of 376 IDPs, including women and children displaced from Moreh and Churachandpur towns.
Ningthoujam Samananda, a retired Navy officer from Moreh Ward No 7, who is overseeing the relief committee of the camp, shared that the IDPs are struggling due to acute shortage of potable water supply.
Additionally, essential commodities provided by the government are neither arriving on time nor in adequate quantities.
He then appealed to the relevant authorities to address these issues by ensuring a steady water supply and timely delivery of essentials.
Samananda also highlighted the plight of students living in the camp, who are the future pillars of society, explaining that many of these students are enrolled in private schools, but have not received any support from the government.
In this regard, he urged both the government and private school authorities to waive monthly tuition fees for these students for the 2025 academic year, requiring only payment of admission fees.
Reminding authorities concerned about the need for market places for products made by the IDPs, he said that the demand has been already placed to the government but no positive response so far.
Samananda then reiterated the demand for the government to resolve the present crisis at the earliest so as to facilitate safe return of the IDPs to their respective homes.
