Chandel meet on NLUP held, no stakeholder turns up

Chandel, July 10 2014: A district level stakeholders' consultation meeting on New Land Use Policy (NLUP) for Chandel district was held at Amity Guest House, Chandel today with Principal Secretary of Works Ramnganing Muivah, Chandel DC Th.Chittaranjan Singh, IAS and Dr Lokho, IFS as the main facilitators.

Although government officials and DLOs of the district took part in the discussions, no stakeholder or representative of civil society organisations (CSOs) in Chandel turned up for the meeting.

It may be recalled here that various civil society organisations based in Chandel district including CNPO, ANTA, MUA, LNKK, BAP, SUR, CLAM and TTU had earlier resolved to stay away from consultative meeting on the proposed New Land Use Policy, denouncing it as a direct threat to the existing village authorities in the hills.

The facilitators highlighted the draft policy and it was followed by interaction during which DLOs shared their views and opinions on the proposed New Land Use Policy.

The Principal Secretary Ramnganing Muivah reportedly instructed some of the DLOs to submit their proposals in writing to the Chandel DC for further discussion on the issue in days to come.
