Imphal, April 09 2019:
The All Tribal Rights' Protection Forum (ATRPFM) has once again appealed to all the voters of Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency to elect an educated individual with clean records, preferably a youngster in the coming election.
A press release issued by the association today mentioned that the people need to elect a candidate who is a graduate at minimum and below 70 years of age and added that a condition should be imposed during elections to prevent parties from fielding illiterate candidates keeping in mind the concessions and privileges enjoyed by MLAs and MPs.
The functions performed by Legislators are vital to democracy and there is no reason why they should be held by uneducated people, it explained adding that illiterate persons are not employed even as Grade IV employees and certainly would not be considered at all.
An MP's duty is to make laws and amend the Constitution.
If a person, who is going to make the laws and amend the Constitution, is not educated enough to understand the pros and cons of the laws, then it would be disastrous, it reasoned.
The association then conveyed that while it is true that even if a person went through higher education, he can still be unsuitable to become a legislator and to have a legislator who didn't even go to college or university in the 21st Century is unfathomable.
The people do not wish to be represented by an ignorant person that can't find the exit or a figure that cannot handle the situations that arise during the emergence of issues like CAB.
The candidate must not only be efficient but also be honest and trusted.
One who won't abuse his position and would be strictly impartial among communities and ready to faithfully carry out his duties as a MP, the association added.
He should be able to talk and present the issues and wishes of the people of the tribal communities and the State as a whole regardless of his affiliation to a political party.
As such, ATRPFM appealed to all the voters to cast their vote for a deserving candidate in the principle of free and fair election.
