Seminar on human trafficking held at TRI Imphal

Imphal, November 08 2019:
A State level seminar on "Women and Child Trafficking among Tribals-Means of Protection" was held at the auditorium hall of Tribal Research Institute, Chingmeirong, Imphal today.
The seminar was organised by TRI, Manipur and All Tribal Students' Union (ATSUM) in partnership with Department of Social Welfare, Government of Manipur under the sponsorship of Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
Speaking at the event, Additional Chief Secretary (TA & Hills) Letkhogin Haokip highlighted the importance of education and awareness on human trafficking and offences against women and children.
He talked about criminals duping parents and young women into human trafficking.
Often young women are promised good jobs and education by human traffickers to lure them out and forced into flesh trade and others, he hinted.
ATSUM president Vareiyo Shatsang also blamed lack of awareness and education as main reasons for tribal children and women falling into traps of human traffickers.
Shatsang called for more awareness oriented activities to educate tribal people across the State about human trafficking.
MU PhD scholar K Grace Kom moderated the seminar.
Programme Officers, State Child Protection Society, Social Welfare Department, Sandhyarani Mangsatabam, Mala Lisham and project officer, FXB India Suraksha Imphal, Kh Sunil Meitei attended the seminar as resource persons.
