Sit-in held, effigies burnt

A sit in protest was staged today by villagers of Kamrei.
Helm mid Thurei of Ukhrul district against the house to houicveriflontion process for Rehabilitation and Resettlement of Mapithel Dam affected villages by officials headed by Ukhrul DC despite a Court order banning the conduct of verification.
The protesters also burned the effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi and MLA Victor Keishing today.
Ukhrul DC had issued an official notification on March 26 last for the conduct of verification in six villages including Louphong, Phayeng, Lamlai-Mongbung, Lamlai Khullen.
Lamlai Khunou and Chadong which are said to be affected by the Mapithel Dam.
As per the notification, officials led by Ukhrul DC went to the villages along with heavy security personnel from yesterday.
Security forces had to open blank fires yesterday to control the agitating people at Chadong village.
The official team again went to Chadong today to resume the verification process under heavy security coverage.
According to Chadong villagers, curfew was imposed at the village since early this morning.
Protesters today displayed placards reading 'we want justice,' 'go back DC' 'no revision, no verification,' 'we deserve our rights,' 'stop divisive policy,' 'stop militarisation,' 'no ERC process, no finalisation,' etc.
