Imphal, August 03 2024:
In the wake of escalating violence in Jiribam district a day after signing a peace agreement, Jiri Apunba Lup (JAL) has issued a strong condemnation over the persistent attacks on the Meetei community.
According to a statement of JAL, Lalpani village located near Seijang was torched by Kuki narco-terrorists, leading to destruction of properties belonging to Meetei community.
A nearby house belonging to a Bengali Muslim family was also severely damaged in a powerful bomb attack.
JAL asserted that this incident is clear evidence that the Meetei community has not carried out any such attacks and accused the radical Kuki militants of perpetrating repeated arson and violence.
JAL emphasised that the Kuki community has become increasingly problematic not only in Manipur but also in neighbouring states and abroad, particularly in Bangladesh and Myanmar.
The organisation said that many Kuki individuals have been killed or arrested by authorities for illegal activities, leading them to flee and secretly enter different parts of India, including Manipur.
JAL cited newspaper reports of Kuki individuals being arrested across India in connection with drug trafficking, and asserted that this further proves their role as perpetrators of violence in the state.
JAL called upon the relevant authorities to take immediate action for apprehending those responsible so as to restore peace in the region, stating that it will be impossible to maintain peace until the militants are uprooted.
Meanwhile, Rural Development Organisation (RDO), South Kashimpur, Sonapur, Jiribam, has issued an appeal for peace and harmony amidst the ongoing conflict.
RDO, in a statement, expressed concern over the recent clashes between the Kuki and Meetei communities, which have resulted in immense suffering, displacement, and loss of properties.
The organisation specifically pointed out an incident that took place on Friday night wherein a "rocket launcher bomb" was fired at the house of Sanahul Haque, a Bengali Muslim resident.
Fortunately, the bomb did not detonate, sparing the family from harm.
However, RDO warned that similar accidents could occur in the future if the violence continues.
RDO urged leaders of both the warring communities to cease hostilities immediately and engage in constructive dialogue to find a peaceful resolution.
It also appealed to the Bengali Community in Jiribam to remain neutral and not take side in the conflict, believing that this neutrality would help reduce tensions and create a conducive environment for peace talks.
Both JAL and RDO called upon the authorities to take necessary steps for maintaining law and order and facilitate peace talks.
RDO emphasised the importance of peace and harmony for the development and prosperity of Jiribam, and urged all communities to work together to build a society where they can coexist in peace and mutual respect.
