Luita Phanit celebrated at Ukhrul

Peh village in Ukhrul has celebrated Luita Phanit (seed sowing festival).
The festival began on February28.At the closing ceremony today, MOMA (Manipur Organic Mission Agency) Project Director K Debdutta Sharma as chief guest said the Horticulture Department is taking up all efforts to provide alternative crops for poppy and promote horticulture and allied activities in the village.
He said the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation is opening an organic farmers' cluster in the village to promote organic farming.
He stated that the State Government had given recognition towards the village's efforts to end poppy cultivation and was rewarded for their commitment against drugs.
Following the advice of the Chief Minister, he said the Horticulture Department along with MOMA have been taking up efforts to promote horticulture related activities and organic farming to give sustainable livelihood to the people of the village.
Poppy cultivation not only degrades the soil but it also adversely impacts the society.
Ending poppy cultivation in Manipur would save its people and their future.
Poppy cultivation must be replaced with other crops which will earn income and at the same time ensure a safe and a secure future, he added.
Locals, representatives of many organisations and officials of the MOMA attended the festival.
