Imphal, June 01 2014:
A workshop-cum-production on "Abhiram Prasanga," a play based on Gouranga Lila (dance drama) was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) here on Sunday.
Organised by Sanchaali, a centre for performing arts, Haobam Marak Ngangom Leikai, Imphal under the aegis of Ministry of Culture, New Delhi, the programme was attended by theatre personality H Kanhailal Singh, who is also the founder Director of Kalakshetra, Imphal; L Kishorjit Singh, Deputy Director (Administration), Art & Culture and L Upendra Sharma, Director, JNMDA as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.
Addressing the inaugural function, Kanhailal said that the number of specialized personalities and critics in the field of performing arts of the State is less today.
Today's generation seems to be very busy with formal education, and song, drama and theatre have been neglected, he said.
He, however, asserted that persons who are working in the field of art have their own distinctive qualities and not all are destined to become such personalities.
"It's our duty to keep up our traditional culture that we have inherited from our forefathers alive," urged Kanhailal.
He said preservation of a particular thing's intrinsic value enhances its true quality, but direct or indirect modification of any art form will not help much because it cannot last long.
Kanhailal said art is purely based on the essential value and hence its lovers always satisfy with it.
He also explained that culture determines human value, therefore promoting and sustaining one's culture is a must.
On the occasion, theatre personality Ratan Thiyam and musicologist Laishram Birendrakumar were honoured with mementos.
The play, Abhiram Prasanga was later presented.
