Monitor Lizard captured

Kakching, June 29 2012:
Locals of Kakching Sumak Leikai Thursday captured a Monitor Lizard (local name:Hangkok) from the house one Pukhrambam Monbi, wife of late Modhuchandra.
The lizard was found climbing the wall of the house at around 1 pm yesterday.
When the locals tried to capture, it went out of the house and climbed up a tree near the house.
Finally it was captured by Kshetri Damu and Nongmaithem Niranjoy by climbing up the tree.

Nongmithem Niranjoy is keeping the lizard at his house now.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Niranjoy explained that Monitor lizard is an endangered species and it was believed to be almost become extinct in Manipur.
He also expressed his desire to hand over it to the authority of Zoological Garden at Iroishemba.
However, he has not been able to contact with the officials of the Zoo nor could he afford to bring the lizard to the Zoo.
