Imphal, May 24 2012:
With the condition of the education system in Thanlon village of Tamenglong district remaing pathetic, the students have no option but come till Tamenglong district headquarters or stay at Imphal to study spending their parents' hard earned money.
There are two government schools namely Thanlon Centre Primary School and Tharon Government Junior High School in the village, but the existing infrastructure and furniture in these schools are in worse condition.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Chief of Thanlon village Rajen Damei expressed desire for construction of the school buildings with brick and mortar and providing necessary infrastructure so as to prevent from destruction in natural calamity like storm.
He lamented that the state government has been neglecting the two schools in the village since long.
Since there is no private school in Thanlon village, all the children of the village as well as from the surrounding areas have been coming to the two government schools for study.
So there is the need for improvement of existing infrastructures in these two schools, he pointed out.
The school buildings have been collapsed several times in storm in previous years but the villagers reconstructed them by contributing required construction materials from among themselves for the sake of the children, the village chief observed.
Finance secretary of Thanlon Student's Union, Nemjuwa Neumai informed that out of the total 12 teachers, only one from Imphal stays at the village to teach the students.
More than 1000 villagers are there in Thanlon out of which 800 are electorates.
However, as majority of the villagers are poor, the children face many difficulties while pursuing their education.
When they reached ninth standard they have to commute up to Tamenglong to study.
Sometimes they find it hard to travel daily as the fare is high.
So they stay at rent there to study, which is also quite expensive.
As there is also transportation problem even though the distance may be only 35 km journey, most students prefer to study in Imphal as the expense is same while studying in Thanlon.
Taking into consideration of all these factors, the Government should give emphasis on upgrading the school for the sake of the students in Thanlon so that they could get proper education in their own village, Neumai said, while drawing the attention of the Government for doing the needful in this regard.
