Two rapists jailed, 2 others remanded

Imphal, October 23 2012: Two persons, one who was found guilty of raping and murdering a girl student from New Lamkang Khunthak in Chandel district and the other involved in raping four girl students at Khoupum in Tamenglong district, have been sent to jail after being produced in the court today.

On the other hand, two other persons including a Commando driver who were charged of raping a student have been remanded to police custody for four days.

According to police report, ZV Wangthing Lamkang (20) was found guilty of killing Kh Catherine alias Shangtoi (18), a student of St Paul High School.

She was found murdered with her throat slit on October 2 at an area between Pallel and Imon village.

Mention may be made that Catherine was also found pregnant with a six-month old feotus during post-mortem.

Wangthing Lamkang killed Catherine after she insisted him to marry her.

Wangthing was arrested on October 14 by Chandel police from Japhou village and was remanded to police custody for eight days.

He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Chandel district yesterday and later sent to jail.

On the other hand, the defected cadre of ZUF, Latankhoi Malongmai of Noney who was involved in raping four girl students of Don Bosco School at Khoupum on October 5, was also sent to jail yesterday after being produced before the CJM Court, Tamenglong.

He was arrested by a joint team of 6/9 GR of Red Shield Division from Khoupum area on October 21 and handed over to Bishnupur Police.

Meanwhile, the two persons who allegedly raped a girl student of class 12 from Kongpal area on October 20 after she was drugged were also produced before the CJM Court, Imphal West today which subsequently remanded them to police custody for four days.

Out of the two accused persons, Yumnam Williams (28) of Khagempalli Pankha is a driver in Imphal West Commandos while the other Thongam Tarun (27) of Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai is an actor and singer.
