First ever mango fest kicks off

The first ever State Level Mango Festival being organized by Fidelity Horticulture cum Sugarcane Growers' Cooperative Society commenced from today at Laipham Loknung, Kakching.
Speaking on the inaugural function as Chief Guest, Education Minister M Okendro said that the State is dependent on other states for every commodity of daily use and so the people should work tirelessly to become self-reliant in every field.
He further said that the State Assembly had deliberated even on the issue of spending huge amount of money on importing fishes from other states.
People also spend lots of money on buying fruits and vegetables from other states.
The economy of the State cannot be improved with its small annual budget returned to other states while buying the day-to-day commodities, the Minister noted.
Okendro lauded the initiative of the farmers for organizing a unique Mango Festival that aims to enhance the economy of the State through horticulture.

He also suggested that the organizers should form a society of mango growers in the State so that government can provide assistance to them.
A torch rally led by Forest Range Officer Naorem Munal from Kakching Irabot Park till Laipham Loknung was also received by Minister Okendro.
Altogether 17 stalls are participating in the two-day mango festival.
The top three mango producers of the festival would be awarded Rs.5000, Rs.4000 and Rs.3000 with consolation prize of Rs.500 to all participants.
Today's inaugural function of the first ever State level mango festival was also attended by MLA of Hiyanglam Constituency M Kunjo as President and MLA of Kakching Constituency Y Surchandra along with Vice Chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council as Guests of Honour.
The festival would conclude tomorrow with a grand music concert.
