Chamol - Sajik Tampak road ambush NIA takes 11 day police custody remand

Imphal, August 21 2019: Self styled Sergeant Major of PLA/ RPF, Chandam Tondon alias Shileiba alias German (29) s/o (L) Shyam Singh of Awang Sekmai, was produced before Special Court, NIA, Manipur today and remanded to 11 days in police custody, in connection with the ambush on a road opening party of 4th Assam Rifles at Sajik Tampak - Chamol road on November 15, 2017, in which one AR personnel was killed and another injured.

Tondon was produced by an NIA team before the Court along with a prayer for remanding him to police custody for 11 days for thorough investigation of the case.

During the proceeding, the IO of the case (through the Special PP, NIA) submitted that in compliance with an order of the Ministry of Home Affairs, NIA (Guwahati Branch) re-registered the case from Chakpikarong PS.

During the course of investigation, self styled 2nd Lieutenant of PLA/RPF, Laishram Priyokumar alias Amuthoi was formally arrested from Sajiwa Manipur Central Jail after taking due permission from the Court.

During his custodial examination, Laishram Priyokumar revealed that Chandam Tondon, a member of PLA/ RPF, was a part of the support group during the attack.

The IO continued that yesterday, Tondon was brought to NIA camp office, Imphal, and on examination, he disclosed that he has been a regular member of PLA/ RPF since 2007 and he was trained at army wing.

He disclosed that in November 2017, self styled Major Ranjit (Chief Operation Commander, PLA/RPF) ordered self styled Captain Somo, to ambush an ROP of 4th Assam Rifles at Chamol and Sajik Tampak road and the supporting team was detailed by Somo, while he (Tondon) was detailed under the command of self styled 2nd Lieutenant Casper in the support group.

The IO mentioned that Tondon was arrested yesterday in connection with the case when he had made himself available for the purpose of investigation and prayed for remanding him in police custody for 11 days.

The Court, after going through submission and the case records, remanded Tondon into police custody till August 31 .

The Court also directed NIA to get Tondon medically examined every 48 hours.

It may be mentioned that on August 17, the same Court remanded Thangjam Achan alias Rajesh alias Thoujal (26) s/o Meghachandra of Pourabi Awang Leikai to 15 days police custody (till August 31) after he was formally arrested for the same case from Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa (where he had been lodged under judicial custody after being arrested by Tengnoupal district police in July this year).

Achan was formally for his role in the ambush as a wireless operator at the control room and for allegedly providing call signs to the attacking team and the supporting team.

Self styled 2nd Lieutenant of PLA/RPF Laishram Priyokumar was also produced before the Court from Sajiwa Central Jail and remanded into further judicial custody till August 31 as well.

It may be mentioned that on December 17 last year, Special Court, NIA, Manipur, had allowed the application filed by Additional SP/Chief Investigation Officer, NIA Camp Guwahati, to declare self styled Captain of PLA/RPF Koijam Ibochouba alias Sumo alias Keisho alias Somo s/o Gourahari of Yairipok Malom Mamang Leikai, self styled 2nd Lieutenant of PLA/RPF Mayanglambam Siromain alias Kesper alias Casper s/o Romesh of Kakching Khunou Angom Leikai and self styled Lance Corporal of PLA/RPF Thokchom Ningthemba alias Ningthem alias Feiroijamba s/o Indrajit of Wapokpi Mamang Leikai, as wanted men in connection with the case.
