Imphal, September 19 2024:
The World Meetei Council (WMC) has submitted a memorandum to union home minister Amit Shah urging for initiating swift action to address the escalating violence in the state.
In the memorandum, WMC chairman Heigrujam Nabashyam expressed grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, particularly in the light of recent attacks on Meetei villages by Chin-Kuki groups.
The memorandum congratulated the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government on completing 100 days in office and extended birthday wishes to PM Narendra Modi, while emphasising the need for Central government's decisive intervention for resolving the crisis in Manipur.
WMC raised specific concerns regarding Chin-Kuki groups using sophisticated weapons, including drones and rockets, to carry out attacks on Meetei villages since September 1 .
Key demands in the memorandum included abrogation of the tripartite Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, which the Council claims has emboldened Chin-Kuki militants, many of whom are alleged to be illegal immigrants.
"The SoO arrangement empowers these militants, escalating the violence," the memorandum stated, while urging the government to revoke the deal immediately.
WMC further alleged that the attacks were being carried out with the tacit support of some sections of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles.
The memorandum called for strong directives from the highest levels of government, including PM Modi, to bring these actions under control and stop the violence.
While urging for immediate and concrete steps to restore peace, and stressing that normalcy can only be achieved once Chin-Kuki militants are halted in their tracks, WMC also suggested that the Army and Assam Rifles be directed to take decisive action to curb the violence.
The WMC's memorandum underscored the gravity of the situation and called for immediate intervention from the Central government to restore peace and stability in the state.
