Patient's death sparks fury at Public Hospital

Imphal, January 19 2014 :
Locals of Oinam Sawombung today stormed at Public Hospital located at Hatta Minuthong here over the death of a young man after an operation.
The deceased has been identified as Oinam LOvingson (22), s/o Nando of Oinam Sawombung under Lilong Police Station.
Lovingson was first admitted to OPD of RIMS Hospital on January 10 following sprains on his legs.
He was examined by Dr Kala who advised him for a surgery.
However, the surgery could not be performed at RIMS Hospital as the operation theatre was being renovated.
As Lovingson was preparing for some recruitment in active service, his family members wanted the surgery to be done urgently.
He was then admitted to Public Hospital on January 11 and the operation was performed on the same day at around 5 pm.
After few days, he began to nauseate and develop problems in urination.
His condition deteriorated further and he was shifted to Raj Polytechnic, where he died at around 9.30 am today.
Enraged by Lovingson's death, the locals of Oinam Sawombung stormed at Public Hospital.
The family members alleged that Lovingson's death was caused due to the negligence of the doctors who had performed the operation at Public Hospital.
They demanded strict action against the doctors and pressed the authorities concerned to give a compensation of Rs one crore.
Meanwhile, Dr Kala clarified that he had taken part in the operation on humanitarian ground at the request of the proprietor of Public Hospital.
There was no negligence on the part of doctors who had performed the operation.
The deceased Lovingson was having problems in his kidneys and also had ulcer and low blood pressure which he did not disclose to the doctors before.
He died after he was admitted to Raj Polyclinic, the doctor added.
On the other hand, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death has decided to launch various intense agitations for ensuring justice, initiate necessary actions against Public Hospital as well as Raj Polyclinic and Dr Kala.
Seeking the co-operation of all the civil society organizations in this regard, the JAC has also decided not to take the body until all its demands are met.
