Irom Sharmila decries threat on media

Imphal, September 18 2013: Irom Chanu Sharmila, also known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, who has been on hunger strike since November 2, 2000, demanding removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, has reacted strongly against the recent threat to media and termed it as utterly unwanted.

Speaking to media on her way out of the JMIC Imphal East Court where she was produced before the court today at around 11:30 am.

Sharmila further stated that threatening of media persons who are performing their duties of disseminating information to the public is not acceptable at all and should never be encouraged.

She went on to say that the killing of innocent non-Manipuri construction workers in a bomb attack recently was an act to convey to the whole world that Manipur is a terrorist dominant society.

Killing of non-Manipuris would never serve any goal of any UG group or whosoever involved in the act, she maintained.

Sharmila also appealed to the young sculptor by the name of Nongmaithem Nandaraj Singh of Kakching Turel Wangma, who has started working on a life size bust of her, to kindly stop his venture as she (Sharmila) does not want any person making her statue while she is still alive.

"Even if it is in support of my agitation to remove AFSPA, I request the young artist not to make my life size bust", Sharmila pleaded.

She also appealed to all to come together and fight against this draconian Act instead of conducting certain functions reacting against imposition of AFSPA.
