UNLF perturbed with indianized art & literature

Imphal, December 17 2013: Affirming that the contributions of literary writers and dramatists are crucial in guiding the revolutionary movement of a nation, the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has said that the Indian colonialists have greatly influenced the art, literature and drama of Manipur while trying to upkeep their dominance in the region.

According to a statement issued by the Central Committee of UNLF, world's renowned writers such as Tolstoy, Gorky and Puskin of Russia; Lu Zun of China; Buro Lapido, Soyinka and Achebe of Africa; Pablo Neruda of Chile and Gracia Marquez of Colombia had made significant contributions to the revolutionary movements of their respective countries.

Their writings were able to sway the people against the authoritarian rule of the colonialists.

They were successful in making the revolution clearer to their people.

However, the influence of Indian colonialists has greatly affected the literature, art and culture of Manipur.

The writers are barred from expressing their true feelings and perception to other people.

They are compelled to write within a boundary set by the Indian colonialists.

Those writers following the Indian norms are showered with awards and honours, while the true patriotic writers are kept in the darkness, it said.

The Indianized art and culture of Manipur is what the Indian colonialists are trying to give to the Manipuris, who have been subjugated and deprived of their basic political rights.

The creativity and true literary skills of Manipuri writers have been kept suppressed for quite a long time.

The writers are unable to bring out the real sociological and political aspects owing to such Indian influence.

The great literary works of Black African intellectuals and anti-colonial writers of Latin America should serve as an inspiration to the writers of Manipur so as to bring out the real taste of Manipuri art and literature, the statement of the UNLF's Central Committee added.
