Symposium on reflection of culture on Puya held

Sahitya Akademi and Historical & Cultural Research Centre organised a symposium on "Reflection of Culture on old Manipuri Script (Puya)" at Manipur Hindi Parishad Hall, Old Assembly Road today.
Historical & Cultural Research Centre president Naoroibam Indramani, convenor Manipur Advisory Board Sahitya Academy N Kirankumar and officer in charge Sahitya Academy Eastern Region Mirkumar Sahu attended the function as presidium members.
N Kirankumar stated that the scientific age that has brought- strong winds of change, however the people should be responsible enough to safeguard as well as promote the cultural heritage of Manipur.
And the symposium was organised with this objective in mind.
With a view to save the State's culture and tradition, it is necessary to know what is written in the ancient literature and books, he said.
These ancient books written by the forefathers, known as Puya which has been passed down from one generation to another is the most prized possession of today's generation.
These books include the origin, cultural practices, traditions, customs, habits etc of Manipuri community, he said and added that it is the responsibility of the present generation to follow and safeguard these ancient practices.
N Kirankumar claimed that a total of 120 books were damaged in the burning of Puya, which is one of the unfortunate incident in the history of Manipur.
President, Historical & Cultural Research Centre Naoroibam Indramani underlined that it is important to know and understand Puya in order to understand the cultures of Manipur.
