Imphal, July 13 2021:
As the state government is planning to inaugurate Barak Bridge by September this year, Bhartia Infra Project Limited (BIPL), which is undertaking the construction work, has informed that 76 per cent of the construction work has completed and they are putting their best efforts to meet the project target.
Addressing media persons at its Mongsangei office on Tuesday, BIPL MD N Ibochou said chief minister N Biren laid foundation stone for Barak and Makru bridges in October 2017 and BIPL began construction work from November the same year with the completion target of April 2020.However, frequent interruptions by illegal organisations, abduction of labourers, engineers and supervisors affected the progress of the project.
The company had faced four instances of abduction during the construction of Makru Bridge and one person was even killed by these illegal organisations.
Such incidents stall the progress of the project by at least one month, he said.
On the other hand, delay in transportation of construction materials for the project due to Covid-19 also hampered the progress.
The fabricated steel super structure of the bridge also remained stranded in Meghalaya for a long period and it reached the project site only after intervention from the state government, he said.
He then thanked the state government for providing round the clock security during the construction of the bridge stating that such security measures taken up by the government made it possible to complete the construction.
He also apologised to the people of the state for not being able to complete the project within the stipulated target due to various disturbances.
Informing that union minister Nitin Gadkari and chief minister N Biren gave strong instruction for completing the Barak Bridge by September, Ibochouba said that the fabricated steel super structure of the bridge has already arrived at the project site and all the labourers used in the construction of Makru bridge will be shifted there to complete the bridge by September.
So far, 76 per cent of the construction work has completed and he is hopeful of completing the project by September.
He also urged the CSOs and people living in and around Barak area to cooperate with the company so that they could meet the deadline.
