Don't put children under extreme pressure, Dr Lenin advises parents

Saying that the objective of education is being derailed in the State due to the general perception that education is equivalent to the marks obtained, prominent psychiatrist Dr RK Lenin has called for modification in the mode of parenting and guiding children in the State.
Speaking as a resource person in the motivation and counselling session for HSLCE and HSSLCE appearing students organized by BOSEM 2019 Parents' Association at Manipur Press Club, Imphal yesterday, Lenin who is also an Associate Professor at Department of Psychiatry, RIMS pointed out that students should not be put under extreme pressure while they prepare for the examinations.
He also asked all parents to provide adequate time and conducive environment for physical and mental preparedness of their children, especially when examinations are near.
He continued that students should take qualitative rest and sound sleep besides eating right amount of food in the course of preparation for the examinations.
Lack of sleep and proper food may affect their memory power and health, he said.
Parents should be aware of and understand the changes their children go through during adolescence period.
Teens should be given proper advice and should be taught about the phase they are in for their better growth and development, he said.
Students should also think logically when natural distractions or intrusive thoughts like romantic mood and materialistic world disrupts in their studies.
They should be properly guided and they should be able to avoid the distractions and focus on their personality development and studies, he opined.
Lenin also advised students not to be over anxious while preparing for examinations.
They should focus on giving their best, he advised.
Social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram also spoke at the counselling session.
