Minor girl allegedly raped by friend

Imphal, January 13 2015: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man in Thoubal district, but a court released the accused on bail before the victim could give her statement.

Disclosing this to journalists, M Manglembi Devi, secretary, Women Welfare Association (WWA) told journalists here that Okram Iton, 20, a resident of Thoubal Pakhong village sexually assaulted the girl on January 5 at his relative's house in his locality.

The victim is a class XI student.

Manglembi said the accused in the rape case was arrested by police on January 9 after her family lodged a complaint with Thoubal Police Station, which later filed a case.

The rapist was produced before the court of chief judicial magistrate, Thoubal on January 12.The court freed him before the victim could give her statement in connection with the case," the WWA leader claimed.

She said that the court was to record the victim's statement on January 15 .

"We condemn the CJM for giving bail to the accused.

That was not fair," she said.

The victim was coming out from her college on the afternoon of January 5 when the accused picked her up on a scooter to drive her home.

A week before, they came to know each other and became friends.

"Iton raped her inside his relative's house.

She was also asked by the accused to sign a court marriage paper, which she refused, after the rape," Manglembi alleged.
