Thoubal, August 12 2020:
As several lakes in the State have vanished due to rapid urbanisation, Government and people must come together to conserve water bodies which are diminishing day by day, said a statement of the Joint Coordination Committee on Wildlife & Biodiversity (JCCWB).
It also said that Waithou Pat and lakes adjacent to it which used to play a significant role in maintaining ecological balance are shrinking fast.
Shrinkage of this important lake has not only affected wildlife greatly but also led to a considerable drop in migration of birds, it said.
Adding that many continue creating fish farms in the lake, despite the existence of "Manipur Conservation of Paddy-Land & Wetlands Act 2014," JCCWB said that such creations make the lake unattractive.
The committee also said that they will submit a memorandum to all concerned to save the lake from vanishing.
