Sit in protest held

A peaceful sit in protest was held at Jakuradhor today, by various social civil organisation including Hmar Inpui Jiribam, Kuki Inpi Jiri-Tamenglong, Hmar National Union block-6, Hmar Students’ Association Jiribam JHQ, Kuki Students Organisation Jiri-Tamenglong, Thadou Students’ Association Jiri-Tamenglong .
The protest was staged against the restriction of paying Hill House Tax in Jiribam and the order issued by Directorate of Settlement and Land Record, Manipur for Revenue Survey of Hill Villages of Jiribam, which covers large part of hill areas of Pherzawl district .
The protesters expressed resentment by raising slogans and placards such as ‘We object Revenue Survey’, ‘Preserve our Rights or leave us be’ .
Speaking to media persons, convenor of Thadou and Hmar social civil organisations of Jiribam-Tamenglong-Vangai range, Pastor Benjamin Shakum stated that the Hill House Tax that have been paying for a long time from the pocket hill villages of Jiribam till 2016 was abruptly halted without any proper reason, followed by an order from the Directorate of Settlement and Revenue for a revenue survey is totally unacceptable to the public as it is considered a threat to the tribal lifestyle and means of livelihood .
He further said that the display of a large area of Hmar villages in Vangai sub-division, Pherzawl district which is shown in the map of Jiribam district is creating confusion among the Hmar populace and needs clarification at the earliest.
