International Human Rights Day observed

Imphal, December 10 2024:
Civil Societies on Human Rights in Manipur and United Nation (CSCHR) and Manipur Commission for Protection of Child Rights jointly observed International Human Rights Day at Manipur Press Club here on Tuesday.
The observance was attended by Commission chairperson Keisham Pradipkumar, Manipur Human Rights Commission former acting chairperson Khaidem Mani, Human Rights Defender Manipur chairman Joy Chingakham, FIDAM president Kangujam Ranjit and Human Rights Defender Manipur advisor Dr Y Ranbir as presidium members.
Speaking at the observance, Pradipkumar pointed out that imposition of prolonged curfew and frequent internet ban in Manipur are also violations of human rights, contrary to the commoners generally believing that human rights violations cover only killings and abductions.
Stating that peace requires justice and justice entails protection of human rights, he asked the union and state governments to shoulder the responsibility of upholding human rights of over 60,000 internally displaced people, irrespective of the community they belong to.
Meanwhile, Manipur University Centre for Human Rights and Duties Education organised International Human Rights Day on the theme 'Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now' at the conference hall of the centre.
The observance was attended by MU School of Social Science dean Prof Th Purnima as chief guest and Department of Law head Dr Y Premanan-da Singh as president, while Manipur Human Rights Commission former member Ng Nongyai and Dhanamanjuri University Department of Law associate professor Dr N Pramod were the guests of honour.
Manipur State Legal Services Authority under the aegis of National Legal Services Authority also organised Human Rights Day cum sensitisation programme on the theme 'Constitutional & Legal Rights of LGBTQ' .
The programme held at ADR Building conference hall, Lamphelpat was attended by MASLSA member secretary Alek Muivah, Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) director Rakesh Meihoubam and SAATHII assistant director Randhoni Lairikyengbam, among others.
Rakesh spoke on 'Laws relating to transgender persons in India: A special reference to Manipur' and Randhoni on 'Needs and issues of gender and sexual diverse individuals - Experience from LAC for GSM communities' .
