Imphal, February 09 2025:
Governor Ajay Kumar BhaIla on Sunday called off the 7th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly scheduled to begin on Monday, hours after chief minister N Biren resigned from his post.
In an official notice, the Governor declared that the previous order issued on January 24, which had fixed the session for February 10, was now "null and void".
As per Article 174 of the Constitution of India, state legislatures must meet at least twice a year, with no more than six months between the last sitting in one session and the date appointed for the first sitting in the next session.
The last sitting of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly was held on August 12, meaning the six-month deadline will expire on February 11 .
To prevent the Assembly from lapsing, the state government must convene the session by February 11 .
Given the urgency of the situation, there are strong possibilities of a new chief minister taking the oath by the morning of February 11 and convening the session on the same' day, a senior politician told'The People's Chronicle.
Biren's resignation came just one day before the start of the Manipur Assembly's budget session.
