Imphal, February 09 2020:
Karang Island Development Organisation (KIDO) has asserted that construction of inland water ways in Loktak Lake will be a good initiative for the people living in Karang as the only transportation for the area is the waterways.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, KIDO president Salam Kheda said that Karang is home to around 3,000 people who are deprived of almost everything such as health, education, economic and others.
The only livelihood for the people of Karang is fishing.
Due to covering of the waterways by water hyacinth, emergency cases like transporting sick individuals to the nearest hospital is a big hurdle.
There have even been cases of child being delivered on a boat.
Many have even died due to failure to reach the hospital on time, he added.
Pointing out that some environmentalists are standing against construction of inland waterways in the lake, the president asked how the people of Karang are supposed to go from one place to another if there is no inland waterway.
If the Government constructs a bridge or any such similar structure, the people of Karang have no objection in scrapping the proposal of the inland waterways, he further added.
