Imphal, December 08 2024:
The Ningol United Progressive Initiative (NUPI), a prominent women's civil society group based in Delhi, has joined forces with six Meetei organisations across India to commemorate the historic Nupi Lan (Women's War) this year.
This collaboration marks a significant step in amplifying the legacy of the Manipuri women's movement and uniting communities to honour their indomitable spirit.
The six partnering organisations are the Manipuri In Kolkata, Women's Wing; Indigenous Manipuri Association (IMA), Women's Wing, Guwahati; Mumbai Manipuri Association NUPI Lup; Meitei NUPI Lup Foundation, Pune; Manipuri Meitei Association Bangalore (MMAB), Women's Wing; and Takhel Leima Tengbang Lup, Agartala, Tripura.
Along with NUPI, these organisations will observe Nupi Lan under a common theme that seeks to inspire reflection on its historical and contemporary relevance.
Speaking about the initiative, NUPI president Ranjana Longjam expressed her enthusiasm: "We are deeply honoured to expand the observance of Nupi Lan in collaboration with six Meetei organisations across India.
Together, we aim to pay tribute to the courage of Manipuri women and inspire current and future generations to carry forward their legacy of resilience and justice".
The event will feature prominent guests, including former Indian women's football captain Ngangom Bala Devi, Manipuri actress Soma Laishram, and senior journalist Sonia Sorenshnagbam.
Their participation aims to further highlight the importance of the historic struggle.
Last year, NUPI observed Nupi Lan in Delhi, achieving a milestone in bringing attention to the resilience and courage of Manipuri women.
This year's nationwide collaboration is expected to deepen awareness of this pivotal chapter in Manipur's history, which saw women rise against colonial and economic oppression, paving the way for significant economic and political reforms in the state.
The observance seeks to educate, inspire, and foster unity by reflecting on the enduring relevance of those struggles in today's socio-political context.
Through this initiative, NUP1 and its partners aim to uphold the legacy of Nupi Lan and the powerful message it continues to convey.
