Imphal, May 08 2022:
While condemning corruption-free remark made by chief minister N Biren Singh during a public function few days back, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) spokesperson S Manaoton said the CM's casual comments on money spent by MLAs during election was very confusing.
Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan here on Sunday, S Manaoton said the recent corruption-free rhetoric of CM Biren Singh was cent percent confusing and such ambiguous remarks should not be made at all, particularly in a public forum.
Before the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election, chief minister N Biren promised to make Manipur a 'land of gem' if BJP comes to power again.
The party received simple majority in the election and accordingly formed government.
Ever since the formation of the new government, CM Biren Singh repeatedly talked about freeing Manipur from the shackles of corruption.
While it is heartening to hear such remark from the chief minister querying about money spent in election in full public view is both perplexing and unwarranted, Manaoton maintained.
Taking a dig at CM Biren's remark made during a public function few days back advising party's MLAs to give up the chronic concept of trying to recoup money exhausted in election from public but to explore alternative means, the MPCC spokesperson wondered whether the previous BJP government collected money spent in election from the public.
MPCC general secretary P Saratchandra, who also attended the press conference, said CM Biren's corruption-free remark mixing with money spent in election by MLAs proves that BJP used money and muscle power in the last assembly election.
The CM's remark made it clear that MLAs spent crores of rupees to win election and this corroborates extravagant spending during election, he said and asked top police officials to register FIR for corrupt practices in election.
