Jessami, September 06 2012:
Even the state government and various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) have initiated a wide range of welfare schemes to educate and uplift the status of women, womenfolk in Jessami village of Ukhrul district have not received any of the benefits and are still lagging behind their counterparts in other parts of the state in all the aspects.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Peimila Wezah, President of Jessami Shanaolong (Women Society) informed that none of the NGOs or the state government agencies has ever landed at Jessami for conducting any awareness programmes for the welfare and empowerment of womenfolk in the border area.
As a result, they have no idea about the welfare measures and schemes taken up by the government from time to time, not to speak of enjoying the benefits of these schemes.
This is one of the main reasons for the womenfolk in Jessami to remain lagging behind others in the process of empowerment, she observed.
Apart from this, none of the widow and physically challenged people in the village has ever received any form of aid from the side of the government and NGOs.
However, government started awarded old age pension to only two people recently, she added.
Highlighting the need for conducting awareness programme on HIV and AIDS in Jessami, Peimila pointed out that most of the people, particularly the youth in the area have no knowledge about HIV and AIDS, and as they are not aware about it, they could not prevent themselves from HIV and other related diseases.
Peimila informed that Jessami Shanaolong has been formed in a bid to encourage weaker section of the society; particularly the women and children.
The women society has been encouraging students from the village who scored high marks in examinations.
It also arranged felicitation functions in honour of N Peace and Kepsowe Weza who topped at Meghalaya and Nagaland Board examinations in 2006 and 2010 respectively.
The society is also providing financial aid to students.
The Shanaolong also felicitated Wpkuzo Weza, who received degree from Manipur University very recently.
She pointed out that since there is no one in Imphal city to guide students from the village, the number of students studying in good academic institutions at Imphal is very less.
