Govindas urges support for positive change in education sector

Imphal, September 05 2022: The State Level Teachers' Day celebration was held on Monday at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound, here with Youth Affairs & Sports minister Govindas Konthoujam and Education minister Th Basantakumar Singh as the chief guest and functional president respectively.

The function organised by Education Department was also attended by Social Welfare minister Heikham Dingo Singh, Manipur University vice chancellor Prof N Lokendra Singh, LDA chairman M Asnikumar, commissioner (education) H Gyan Prakash, director (education-university) Dr Rangitabali Waikhom and director (education-schools) L Nandakumar Singh as the guests of honour.

Speaking at the function, minister Govindas Konthou am called upon the teachers to guide their pupils to the path of wisdom and enlightenment.

While noting that the relationship between teachers and students has been diluted to some extent with the change in time, the minister said that to become a perfect human being, we should inculcate the knowledge of respecting our teachers.

Stating that the government has been working hard to improve the education sector in the state, Govindas stressed that all should join hands for a positive change to fulfil the vision of the government.

He also called upon all stakeholders to contribute their mite towards making the government schools vibrant.

Congratulating the awardees and all the teachers on the occasion of Teachers' Day, he also appealed to the teachers to educate the students in all aspects instead of making them just a literate.

Delivering the address as the functional president, Education minister Basantakumar said that teachers are the most respected persons in the society as they are the ones that make their students realise their dreams.

Stating that 20 per cent of the state's population consisting of students are crucial for a better future, he stressed the need for the teachers to educate the students along with equal emphasis on involving them in extracurricular activities.

While reminding the teach ers that they became teachers by choice, minister Basanta urged the teachers discharge their duties with dedication and sincerity.

He also stated that the government is making every effort to improve the education sector even though there are many challenges while informing that the government is working to rationalise posting of teachers with due consideration of the need to ensure accommodation facilities.

Sharing his observation that teachers should be posted nearest to their respective residence to enable them understand the situation of the local issues and also have the advantage of staying close with their families, the minister reiterated his appeal to the teachers to work with dedication and sincerity while imparting knowledge to the students.

The world has become a global village and we need to work together to be a part of the global village, added the minister.

At the National Level function organised by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education, Nongmaithem Gautam Singh, who is primary teacher of Eastern Ideal High School, Imphal East was conferred the National Award to Teacher for the year 2022.As a part of the function, State Teachers' awards were handed over to Ch Indira Devi, Lecturer of Johnstone Higher Secondary School; Seikholen Singsit, Science Graduate Teacher, Keithelmanbi Government High School; Y Prem Singh, Arts Graduate Teacher, Ngaikhong High School; Kharga Prasad Prasain, Hindi Graduate Teacher, Bishnulal High School; O Arunkumari Devi, Lecturer, Lilong Higher Secondary School; Kh Nirojlata Devi, Lecturer, Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School; and RK Ranjita, Head Mistress in-charge, Wangkhei High School.

State Level College Teachers' Award 2021-22 under different categories were also presented on the occasion.

The Best Principal Award carrying a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a certificate was handed over to Dr M Priyokumar Singh, Principal, Imphal College.

The Lifetime achievement Award for Faculty Member carrying a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a Certificate was given to Prof H Manoranjan Sharma, Principal in-charge, Waikhom Mani Girls' College.

The Best IQAC Team Award was bagged by Churachandpur College.

The award consisted cash prize of Rs 50,000 and certificate.

The Best Faculty Member Award which carries a cash prize of Rs 30,000 and certificate was given to Dr M Suresh Singh, Associate Professor, GP Women's College; and STEM Award for lady Faculty Member with a cash prize of Rs 30,000 and certificate was handed to Ch Umabati Devi, Assistant Professor, GP Women's College, Imphal.

Appreciation Awards from Education (U) were given to Manipur University, Canchipur; Kumbi College, Moirang; and Haorokcham Anil, Managing Director, Synapx.

Special Awards were distributed to 48 government schools with 100 percent pass percentage record in the High School Leaving Certificate Examination (HSLCE) 2022 and tablets to 17 primary teachers from 17 zones for classroom teaching.

The number of tablets to be distributed is 10,728 and will be distributed to the teachers concerned at the earliest.

State Teacher awardees, teachers from various government schools, officials and staff of Education Department and students attended the function.
