'Female birth rate decreases'

Imphal, September 05 2011:
The female birth rate in the state has reduced as compared to the previous census report according to the Provisional Population Totals Rural-Urban Distribution which was published today at the office of the Directorate of Census Operations, Porompat.
According to the provisional report, the girl population of 0 to 6 years in the state is 934 for every 1000 boys as compared to 957 girls for every 1000 boys as per the report of 2001 census.
The actual figures in rural and urban areas are 929 and 945 respectively.
However, the girl populations of 6 years and above indicate some increase with 987 girls for every 1000 boys as compared to the 974 girls in the 2001 census with actual figures in rural and urban areas reading 966 and 1038 respectively.
Numbers of urban areas have increased to 51 from 33 in 2001 census report while the rural areas have also increased to 2588 from 2391.According to the provisional report, the total population of the state has reached 27,21,755 with a sharp increase of 42,7860 which is 18.65 percent.
Number of literate persons is 18,91,196 out of which 10,26,733 were male and 8,64,463 were female.
Literacy rate was 69.93 percent in the previous census report.
However, the rate has increased upto 79.85 percent according to the report.
The actual literacy rate in rural and urban areas is 77.15 percent and 85.98 percent respectively.
Male literacy rate is 86.49 percent as compared to 79.54 percent in previous census report and the rates in rural and urban areas are 84.14 percent and 92.05 percent as compared to 76.49 percent and 88.71 percent respectively in 2001 census report.
Female literacy rate is 73.17 percent as compared to 60.10 percent in 2001 census report and the rates in rural and urban areas are 69.95 percent and 80.21 percent as compared to 56.62 percent and 70.01 percent respectively in 2001 census report.
Manipur has surpassed the overall literacy rate of the country which is only 74.04 percent while Manipur has 79.85 percent.
The overall male literacy rate of India is 82.18 percent while Manipur has 86.49 percent.
Overall female literacy rate of the country is 65.46 percent while Manipur has 73.17 percent.
Imphal West DC K Radhakumar who attended the function said that there is need for investigating of abortion of girl child being practiced in the state.
He also said that it is a good sign for the state to witness the increasing number of urban areas.
Census operation Director Y Thamkishore, Imphal East DC Lakshmikumar and Thoubal DC RK Dinesh also attended the function.
Thamkishore said that the actual report will be published next year after reviewing and correcting the provisional report.
