Minor girl raped by her own uncle

Imphal, July 05 2014 : A 40-year-old man has been sent to jail on the charge of raping his niece who is only 5-year-old.The rape incident reportedly took place in Imphal West on June 6 last.

Sanatombi (named changed) was sexually assaulted by her uncle Deven (not real name) inside his house, mother of the minor victim told newsmen at Manipur Press Club here Saturday.

The mother, who also did not want to disclose her name, said she was not at home when the rape took place in the afternoon of June 6 as she was attending a wedding ceremony in another locality in the district.

When she returned home, the girl narrated the whole incident to her and she immediately brought up the matter with her mother-in-law.

The mother said her mother-in-law refused to listen to her complaint.

But the accused was arrested by police around midnight on the same day after she alerted the neighbours.

On the following day, the victim girl was examined at RIMS and it was confirmed that she had been raped by her uncle, she said.

Seeking support and help from the civil society organsitions in her efforts to punish the accused, the victim's mother appealed to the All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) not to help the accused if he tries to seek bail.
