Imphal, June 04 2014:
The trial of Irom Sharmila Chanu's case under section of 309 of IPC (attempt to commit suicide) would commence from July 7 next month at the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East.
As there is prima facie evidence against her, a charge for attempting to commit suicide has been framed against Sharmila, who has been on indefinite hunger strike since November, 2000 in the aftermath of Malom massacre in which 10 civilians were mowed down by Assam Rifles personnel.

Talking to media persons at CJM Court Complex, Lamphelpat here today, Irom Sharmila reiterated that the charges against her are wrong and she has been on hunger-strike for the cause of human rights and not to commit suicide.
She wants the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPSA) to be repealed from the soil of Manipur.
She is indeed eager to live happily and peacefully with fellow brothers and sisters of the State, the Iron Lady added.
Sharmila's counsel Khaidem Mani said that he would go for Appeal Revision to a higher court.
Sharmila's hunger strike is to demand right to live and right to liberty for the people, not as a means to end her own life.
