Imphal, April 03 2013:
Police have to resort to the use of tear gas shells and blank firings to quell the fuming people at Chadong village in Ukhrul district today.
The Mapithel Dam Affected Villages Organisation (MDAVO) is sternly against the move of the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul for the house-to-house verification of the people in connection with the Rehabilitation and Re-settlement (R&R) .
According to the MDAVO, it had held several rounds of talks with the government on the rehabilitation and resettlement matter through the Expert Review Committee.
The MDAVO wants that the Expert Review Committee (ERC) should involve in the matter.
Litan police had to use tear gas shells to disperse the people as the furious villagers blocked roads leading to Chadong village in order to prevent the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul entering the village.
From 9 am till 5 pm commotion was witnessed in the area as the security force personnel tussled with the villagers.
The deputy commissioner along with the officials of Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC) however managed to enter Chadong village at around 4:30 pm.
On March 26, the Deputy Commissioner had directed that field verification of those families whose photographs were not captured during the previous verification under Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) Package in respect of Chadong village would be conducted on April 3 and 4 .
On the other hand, the MDAVO said it is against the directive of the deputy commossioner because several rounds of talks had already been held with the Manipur government through the Exper Review Committee formed officially to review the hoslistic impact of the Mapithel Dam.
The MDAVO then urged the government to revive the Expert Review Committee.
