Man found shot dead, woman slit to death

Imphal, November 30 2012:
In two separate incidents of 'gruesome crime' which took place in different parts of the state today, a young man, who was reportedly often enquired by Thoubal police, was found shot dead in Thoubal district while a woman was found death with her throat slit in Imphal West district.
In the first incident, 30-year old Yanglem Naoba alias Bisheshwar, s/o Y Basanta of Thoubal Wangmataba Sorok Mathak, who was said to be often summoned by Thoubal police for inquiry in connection with some case, was found shot dead near Thoubal Nongangkhong Kabolambi (Chabaltabi) early morning today.
Naoba was a shopkeeper selling cements, fertilizers and iron rods and he left behind his wife and two daughters.
The bullet-riddled body of Naoba was come across by some morning joggers along the roadside at around 6.30 am.
According to police, Naoba received one fatal bullet shot on his forehead and one 9mm pistol, one empty case, another live round, one Nokia mobile hand set and the keys of his shop have been recovered from the site of the crime.
Thoubal police have picked up the dead body and deposited it at the mortuary of JNIMS for post mortem.
According to family members, Naoba was often disturbed by Thoubal Police Commandos over a mortgaged laptop by one Huidrom Rohitkumar, who has been arrested by Thoubal Police Commandos over his alleged connection with an organization named, Manipur Kanba Lup (MKL), which has never been heard of earlier.
Rohitkumar is said to be the Secretary of the organization.
Subadani, wife of the deceased, told Hueiyen Lanpao that Naoba went out of home for his shop at around 5:30 am today.
While going he told her that they would be going to meet some Thoubal Police Commandos while his father replaced him in the shop.
But not long after he left, news came that Naoba was shot death by unknown miscreants.
According to police report, soon after the news reached, the police went to the spot and found the body in a pool of blood.
He was shot from close range on the forehead.
Investigation into the possible motive behind the killing is being carried out.
Enraged over the killing, hundreds of local rsidents came out and blocked Imphal-Moreh road with burning of tyres all along to prevent vehicular movement.
The protestors demanded immediate identification of the killers.
Along with forming a joint action committee (JAC) in protest over the killing, agitated locals have also decided not to take the dead body until the persons involved in the killing are brought to justice.
A memorandum in this regard has also been submitted to the DC and SDPO of the district.
On the other hand, a middle-aged woman was found dead with her throat slit near a canal connecting Iroishemba and Lamdeng under Lamphel Police Station at around 7 am today.
According to police report, the identity of the woman is yet to be established and no one has come to claim the body till late evening.
A team of forensic Science along with a Magistrate conducted an inquest of the body at the spot, after which it has been deposited at the mortuary of RIMS for identification.
The dead body was encountered by locals.
There were no houses near the spot.
However, only two houses could be seen at a far off distance.
Locals said that they did not hear anything unusual last night.
The deceased lady resembled a Meetei woman, is fair in complexion and wore a stone-embedded ring on her left ring finger.
She also wore gold colour bangles and big earrings.
She was found clad with a reddish coloured Phanek with sky blue inner and brown-coloured jersey with a white blouse underneath.
An amount of Rs 3500 was also found in the pocket of her innerwear.
At a distance of about 70 metres from the spot where the body was found lying, a handbag which is believed to be that of the victim was found.
Some vegetables were found inside the bag.
Women Action for Development (WAD) has strongly condemned the brutal act of killing the woman while the State is observing the fortnight observation protesting crime against women.
While addressing media persons at its office at Palace compound today, Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary of WAD, stated that crime against women is rising in the state.
One of the main reasons behind committing crime against women is due to easy availability and use of drugs in the state.
The government needs to come up with specific rules to counter the crime against women.
Suggesting ways and means of arresting the culprits, Sobita stressed on the need to announce cash award to whosoever provides information of the killers.
