In a landmark development, oil tankers have started unloading fuels at the newly constructed Malom oil depot from today.
CAF&PD and Works Minister Ksh Biren, Chief Secretary O Nabakishore, CAF&PD Commissioner, IOC Chief Divisional Retail Sales Manager Sinam Ibungoton and other officials were present at a simple function held at the depot which saw unloading of 12 Kls of diesel on trial basis.
Speaking at the occasion , Ksh Biren said that the oil depot would be formally commissioned within the next two months after unloading 50 oil tankers at the depot every day.
Once the Malom depot is commissioned, people would not be required to stand in long queues in front of oil pumps even if there are prolonged blockades.
Sinam Ibungoton claimed that the Malom depot is the first 'smart terminal' among all the oil depots located in the entire Northeastern region.
Loading and unloading are fully automated and one can do shopping with smart cards within the depot's complex.
As diesel has been unloaded at the depot, petrol and SK oil would also be unloaded within the next couple of days.
The depot would be stocked up within two months before it is formally commissioned in November.
The total stock capacity of Malom depot is 21,975 Kls comprising of 5124 Kls of petrol, 11796 Kls of diesel and 5055 Kls of SK Oil.
These stocks would last 40 days, 50 days and 60 days respectively.
The average monthly requirement of petrol in Manipur is 400 Kls and they are usually supplied by IOC and BPCL, Ibungoton said.
