Scholarship amount for disabled persons to be increased: AK Mirabai

A two-day long seminar on Empowering the Persons with Disabilities: Perspectives and Issues being jointly organized by Department of Social Welfare, Spastic Society of Manipur and All Manipur Handicapped Persons Welfare Association in collaboration with National Institute for the Orthopedically Handicapped, Kolkata commenced from today at Manipur Press Club here.
The inaugural function was graced by AK Mirabai, Social Welfare Minister as Chief Guest; Dr A Biswas, Director of National Institute for the Orthopedically Handicapped as President and L Dhaneshor Sharma, Dept of Social Welfare as Guest of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, AK Mirabai said the three percent reservation for disabled persons in government jobs will be strictly implemented without any bias and favoritism and appealed to applicants of jobs to inform the concerned department before two months so that miscommunication and other lapses do not occur.
She also called upon the people to join hands together so that disabled persons are respected in the society and they are not deprived of their basic rights as well as the benefits of the schemes taken up for their betterment and welfare.
Maintaining that various development schemes for disabled persons will be taken up one by one without leaving out any; the Minister assured that the Social Welfare Department will try to increase grants and aids to disabled persons who run institutes and other associations.
AK Mirabai informed that the department has also been trying to increase the scholarship amount for handicapped persons.
During the function, Dr A Biswas spoke on 'Disability Prevention and Rehabilitative Aspect' along with presenting a slide show of the topic.
