Polluted Imphal River posing serious threat to public health

Imphal, November 26 2013:
The increasing level of water pollution at Imphal River is becoming a threat to public health in the State.
Imphal River is the major source of water for about 40 percent population in the valley region.
It originates from the hills at Kangpokpi area and flows through various places under Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Chandel districts.
Moreover, it is the sole source of water for many major water supply schemes in the State.
The water supply schemes at Ningthem Pukhri Mapal, Singjamei Chingamathak, Moirangkhom, Akampat, Okram Chuthek, Sairom Leirak, Canchipur, Kiyamgei.
Lilong and others are sourcing the required water from Imphal River.

Human activities related to bathing and washing clothes inside the river water has also increased the level of pollution and toxicity of water.
However, there is no authorized body to regulate all these activities at Imphal River.
According to an expert, continuous addition of fabric dyes and detergents to water bodies through various human activities would lead to accumulation of toxic substances and render the river water unfit for consumption.
Necessary steps must be taken up by the authorities concerned in order to check water pollution and save millions of life in the State, the expert enjoined.
