Multi-tier parking lots in Imphal soon: Khemchand

Imphal, June 25 2022: MAHUD Minster Y Khemchand has revealed that the government will soon construct multi-layered parking lots around Imphal city area to ease traffic congestion in the capital city.

Interacting with media persons on the sidelines of celebration of 7th anniversary of Imphal Smart City Mission, Khemchand said that the multi-layered parking lots will be constructed under smart city mission for both two wheeler and four wheeler vehicles.

It will help in reducing traffic congestion and problem of parking space to a great extent, he said.

Chipping in, IMC commissioner Th Harikumar explained that four parking lots will be constructed around Imphal city in two models - rotary and horizontal parking, with a capacity of 70 four wheelers and 40 two-wheelers each.

These parking lots will be constructed near Kangla eastern bank, temporary market, Nagamapal road and Secure Building, near North AOC.

Apart from the four, two mega multi-layer parking lots will also be constructed soon.

The proposed locations are government quarters near MG Avenue (capacity of 400 vehicles) and southern side of Keishampat power house (capacity of 150 vehicles).

Scheme has been finalised for the projects but tender process is yet to begin, he said.

The commissioner also informed that the first phase of mission is in good progress.

Construction of Integrated Command and Control Centre is in progress while other components of the first phase are being targeted for completion by December 2023, he added.

Meanwhile, MAHUD commissioner M Joykumar said that the centre state share for the mission was 50:50.However, the fund sharing pattern has now been changed to 90:10 and this will reduce the financial burden on the state government to a great extent, he added.

Earlier, the anniversary celebration of Imphal Smart City Mission commenced with a tree plantation programme conducted along the eastern bank of Kangla on Saturday.

MAHUD minister Y Khemchand, who led the programme, appreciated the teaching & non-teaching staff and students of Bhairodan Maxwell School for their participation in the tree plantation programme.

MAHUD commissioner M Joykumar said that there might be road widening projects in the second phase of the smart city mission and stressed the need for support from CSOs and stakeholders.

He also said that the eastern bank of Kangla will be extended up to Minuthong.

Imphal Smart City Limited CEO Th Harikumar said that the present eastern bank of Kangla was taken up under the first phase of the mission and extension up to Minuthong will be taken up in the second phase.

The second phase of the mission will also include construction of a motorable road on the eastern bank of Imphal river from Minuthong to Sanjenthong, he added.
