Imphal, December 23 2017: Acknowledging the pivotal role of media in the society, Thangmeiband AC MLA Kh Joykisan stated that one should not threaten or cause obstruction to media for criticising malpractices of political parties and loopholes on the part of the State Government .

He was addressing the 5th death anniversary observance of cameraman Th Dwijamani alias Nanao at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching, Imphal West district today .

Mention may be made that cameraman Dwijamani was killed in police firing while doing media coverage of an irate mob at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching on December 23, 2012 in connection with the alleged assault against film actress Momoko by a leader of NSCN (IM) .

Joykisan stated that media of the State have been shouldering a big responsibility towards the society against all odds .

He further stated that influential people including politicians, bureaucrats and others should also respect media .

One should not interfere in the duty of journalists and serve unwarranted threat to them, he added .

The MLA expressed dismay over the recent incidents of serving threats to several journalists and burning copies of daily newspapers .

He also appealed to all the political parties to acknowledge freedom of expression bestowed on media .

President of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) Wangkhemcha Shamjai; general secretary Sukham Nanda, other office bearers of the union; journalists from different media houses and locals attended the observance function .

Floral tributes were offered at the portrait of Dwijamani who was cremated at Thangmeiband Cheiraoching.
