Over 30 students hurt in police action

Imphal, July 23 2014:
Demanding implementation of Inner Line permit system in the state, students from various educational institutions in the valley under the aegis of the students' wing of the Joint Action Committee on Inner line permit system in Manipur today resorted to various forms of agitations.
In a bid to disperse the agitating students of Johnstone Higher secondary school here today, Police burst teargas cells, smoke bombs and rubber bullets injuring over 30 students in the process.
A personnel of Imphal West Police Commando also sustained injury during retaliation by the agitators with stones.
The mayhem happened when a huge number of students came out of the school to head towards the Manipur Assembly premises at around 11 am.
The police commandos of Imphal west district resorted to lathi charge on the students who defied the police barricade at the gate of Johnston school.
Police then burst tear gas cells, rubber bullets and smoke bombs injuring over 30 students.

According to reports, doors and windows of the school were also broken during the scuffle between the police and agitators, while some of the vehicles parked nearby suffered damage.
Among those wounded in the police action, some who sustained serious injuries have been identified as Yumnam Deepak (Class XII) from Thoubal Athokpam, Thangjam Sasikumar (Class XII sc.) from Hiyangthang, Pukhrambam Gunachandra (XII Arts) from Thangmeiband, Dipu Laishram (XII Sc) from Kwakeithel, Md.Rawasim (XII Arts) from Thoubal Moijing and Mairembam Amosh (XII arts) .
The police personnel, who was wounded in the scuffle, is identified as Yumnam Prakash.
On the other hand, around 700 students belonging to Luiman Maheikol school, N.Tomchou School, Sur Rashi Elite school, Sanatombi High School, HD Academy etc.
of Mayang Imphal area staged protest at the residential gate of Works Minister Kh.
Ratankumar to press the demand for implementation of Inner Line permit system.
The Minister was not present at his residence during the time of launching the agitation at around 2 pm today, and the security personnel posted at the residence of the Minister did not intervene, reports said.
Students of Brilliant Public school, Little Master School, and Samurou High School also blocked the road at Samurou area to demand implementation of the inner line permit system in Manipur.
Students of Temple of Learning, Paradise Academy, and Imphal Public School in Imphal area also organised similar protest demonstrations.
