14 shops gutted, goods worth Rs 24 lakh destroyed

Imphal, October 22 2012:
At least 14 shops have been burnt down to ciders in a blazing fire which erupted at Kwakeithel near Tiddim ground today destroying goods worth Rs 24 lakhs.
The incident occurred at around 8:30 am today.
The shops that have been gutted included hotels, grocery shops, mobile repairing centre, photo studio, scrap collecting centre, barber shop, meat centres, motor workshop, pan shop, Xerox and computer centres and stationeries.
The plot on which the ill-fated shops stood belongs to one Takellambam Shantikumar.
According to reports culled from the site of the incident, the fire broke out from the meat centre and spread to other shops.
As soon as the fire broke out, the people of the locality informed the Fire Service Department and a team of Fire tenders rushed in to douse the fire.

As the fire engulfed the whole complex in no time, some people staying in the rented rooms on the upper floor were seen shouting for help.
One woman was seen throwing down her little kid from a rented room to save her child from the fire.
Around 5 cooking gas cylinders which were inside the burning shops also exploded thus creating difficulties for the fire fighters to put off the fire.
However, after a tiresome effort, the fire fighters managed to bring the fire under control ultimately at around 1 pm.
No human casualty was reported in the incident.
