Imphal, November 20 2011:
Kangla is not just a historically important place but also a sacred religious site of the people, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh has observed.
He was speaking at the observance of 7th Kangla Day at Kangla Hall here today.
Organised under the aegis of Kangla Fort Board, Manipur, the observance marked handing over Kangla to the people of Manipur from the occupation of Assam Rifles by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on this day in 2004 .
Speaking as Chief Guest of the observance, Ibobi said that Kangla is not just a historically important place but it is also a sacred religious site of the people.
The state government has taken up the responsibility of developing and preserving Kangla to its pristine past glory, which was not possible while under the occupation of Assam Rifles.
For this purpose, the government has set up Kangla Fort Board.
With restoring of Kangla to its prestine past glory, we would not only be able to show to the rest of the world that Manipur was once an independent kingdom but also instill a sense of pride to the generations to come, the Chief Minister observed, adding that the government has no intention of taking the credit of developing Kangla, which he described as the property of the people of Manipur.
The Chief Minister pointed out that just like the palace of the Manipuri king at Canchipur, the government of Manipur wants to develop and preserve the existing Sana Konung at Palace Compound, Wangkhei for showcasing to the visiting tourists.
But the family members have not given any positive response.
This is not a question of interfering in the affairs of Sana Konung, the Chief Minister clarified.
