Inquiry into assault on Hueiyen Lanpao staff begins: Deputy CM Gaikhangam

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam Thursday said a departmental inquiry has been initiated against five police commandos accused of brutally assaulting Willar Leimapokpam, a staff member of local daily Hueiyen Lanpao (English Edition) .
Willar (28), a resident of Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal, Imphal East, is currently recuperating at Raj Medicity, North AOC.
He suffered head injury in the incident that took place near the newspaper office at Sega Road Thouda Bhabok Leikai in Imphal West on August 17 evening.
Willar was severely thrashed by the police commando personnel who were trying to disperse a mob who were enforcing a road blockade during ILP protest.
Willar identified himself to the police personnel but he was subjected to subjected to brutal physical assault.

Gaikhangam, who also holds Home portfolio, visited Willar at Raj Medicity on Thursday and extended monetary assistance to him for his medical treatment.
Asked if any action has been taken up against the erring cops, the Deputy Chief Minister told media persons at the private hospital that all the cops involved in the incident have been immobilized and prohibited from discharging duty.
He said a departmental inquiry has been initiated against the erring cops but the quantum of punishment to be given to them will be known after the inquiry report is submitted.
The Deputy Chief Minister termed the incident as "unfortunate" and assured that steps will be taken to avoid such unwanted incidents in future.
It may be mentioned that All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) had on Wednesday set a deadline of 48 hours to take action against the erring police personnel.
