Need to adopt organic farming stressed

Project Director of Manipur Organic Mission Agency (MOMA), K Debduta Sharma has appealed to the farmers of the State to adopt and promote organic farming in order to boost their income as well as economy of the State.
He was speaking at a one-day farmers' training programme on organic farming held .
at Tadubi Community Hall, Tadubi, Senapati district yesterday.
The training programme was jointly organised by People's Protection Committee Manipur (PPCM), Mao Union, Imphal and Mao Youth & Student Union under the sponsorship of MOMA under Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCONER) .
Addressing the gathering as a presidium member, Debduta informed that the organic farming project taken up by MOMA under MOVCONOR in Manipur is planning to rope in another 500 farmers in its second year.
He said that a large ready been engaged in the first year of the project.
He said that farmers who adopted organic farming will get certification for organic farming after they practiced the same for three consecutive years.
He also conveyed that all the expenses required for practicing organic farming by the farmers, including registration fee amounting to around Rs 1,20,000 per farmer will be borne by MOMA.
He expressed apprehension that cultivation of vegetables, fruits and other crops by using fertilizers and chemicals has posed a serious threat to human health.
The adverse impacts of consuming such eatable items have been increased alarmingly in the State as well as in the country.
He opined that there is a need to adopt organic farming in a large scale in the State to protect the society and future generations from the menace.
Giving keynote address at the programme, PPCM general secretary Khumukcham Chingkhei Luwang claimed that the organisation has been taking an active role in the effort to address the grievances of the people living in the hills and remote areas of the State.
He maintained that the organisation had played a pivotal role in the effort to get the existing market place for Mao vendors in Imphal.
He also assured that all possible help will be extended to the hill people in the future.
The training programme was also attended by Punil Losii Mao, general secretary, Mao Union, Imphal as the presidium member while Dr L Gibit Singh, Assistant Project Officer, MOM A and K Nimaichand Singh, Assistant Professor, MOMA were present as resource persons.
