Shirui festival from May 25

The Shirui Festival, which has been in hiatus for two years due to Covid-19 pandemic, will be held this year for four days from May 25.The first meeting of the Shirui Festival 2022 Organising Committee was held at the CM's bungalow here on Wednesday.
Committee members minister Khashim Vashum, MLA Ram Muivah and headmen of Shirui and nearby villages attended the meeting.
The schedule for the festival was proposed by the headmen and the commit tee approved it during the meeting during which the participants agreed to hold the opening ceremony at Shirui village and the closing ceremony at Bakshi ground in Ukhrul town.
In earlier editions of the festival, different international bands were invited to perform.
Wednesday's meeting resolved to refrain from inviting international bands due to Covid-19 pandemic.
However, popular bands from northeast states and local artistes will perform at the festival.
In view of the expected huge footfall during the festival, PWD officials have been instructed to take up blacktopping works of all important roads in Ukhrul district from drain to drain.
The officials were also instructed to develop parking lots at suitable places to accommodate the huge traffic volume.
Further meetings will be held before the festival.
Meanwhile, works commissioner T Ranjit has asked chief engineer PWD to take up the works for black topping of 1 km-long Shirui Ring Road, parking site (270 ft x 80 ft approximately) adjacent to the ring road, and repairing of sideway roads/drains in Ukhrul district headquarters.
In an order, the commissioner also instructed the department to execute the works on top priority in consultation with the DC Ukhrul and all stakeholders concerned.
