Ukhrul, August 19 2015:
Adding to the perils of deplorable roads during this monsoon, masses of rotten garbage which have been accumulating in several parts of the town due to alleged negligence on the part of the Small Town Committee (STC), Ukhrul ADC in timely collecting and disposing of the waste have made life miserable for the general populace of the town.
The stench emanating from the rotting filth has been posing serious health hazards to the residents.
With the STC authorities failing to timely remove the waste materials from roadside bins for weeks if not months on end, the filth has been mounting up beyond the bins.
So much so, many local residents have been mindlessly dumping both domestic and market waste on the open roadside of the township.

At Phungreitang bazaar, all sorts of solid waste materials are found dumped ahead of the waste bins located in front of District Forest Department Office.
Subsequently, Seipet Phungreitang East put up a notice at the site warning offenders to pay a fine of Rs 500 if found dumping rubbishes beyond the concrete bin.
However, local residents continue to dump all sorts of rubbishes including plastic carry bags, bottles, carton boxes, gunny bags, vegetable waste etc.
in the open space by the roadside turning the site into a safe breeding ground for rodents, mosquitoes and flies.
Moreover, stray cattle and dogs have further aggravated the disgusting pollution of the environment.
These animals litter the stinking filth on to the town's main road causing traffic menace, apart from health hazards.
Similar disgusting scene can be seen around the waste bin near the 6th Manipur Riffles Gate at Hamleikhong where various shops, butchers and vegetable sheds are located.
A meat seller told Hueiyen Lanpao that earlier a garbage truck of the STC collected the waste from time to time but this time the truck had not come despite the rubbishes are mounting up.
"The rotting garbage has not been removed more than a month now," he rued.
Another lady who runs a shop nearby the bin said that the reek from the decomposed waste has been making them sick each day and wished that the bin is emptied at the earliest.
Meanwhile, efforts to contact STC authority in the matter have failed and the reason behind the failure of the concerned authority to collect the pilling garbage for a prolonged period could not be known.
