Imphal, August 16 2014 :
Manipur University Tribal Students' Union (MUTSU) on Saturday threatened to launch a sustained agitation if the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) is not implemented soon by the Manipur University (MU) authority.
In a representation to the Vice-Chanelllor, Manipur University, MUTSU has made its stand clear with regard to the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act, 2012, MUTSU president LH Seitinthang said during a press meet at Manipur Press Club here on Saturday.
"We've submitted a representation to Prof H Nandakumar Sarma, VC pressing him to implement the Act without any delay," he informed.
The decision taken in the Academic Council meeting held on August 14, to defer the implementation of the Act is 'unacceptable' to the tribal students in Manipur and MUTSU in particular, the representation to the VC said.
It said the Academic Council is not the competent authority to decide whether to enforce or withhold this Act in line with their own handiness in the backdrop of agitation by some student sections opposing against imposition of the Act.
The decision to bring the Act into effect in principle from 2015 is not tolerable to the union, it said.
MUTSU thinks that the academic disturbances prevailing in the varsity campusagitation by some student sections and vacating hostellersis prompted by the MU authority's intent to delay the implementation process of the Act, the representation alleged and said, "MU authority is making a mountain out of a mole" .
MUTSU will not accept the hide-and-seek attitude of the varsity authority over the issue, it declared and warned that unless the union's representation is considered and resolved the issue, it would will not allow the admission process to commence.
Seitinthang demanded that MU authority issue an immediate order for implementation of the Act within two-three days, warning that a sustained agitation over the issue will be launched with the help of other tribal social organisations should the varsity authority continues to ignore it.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) would also be filed to seek justice, he informed, adding an open discussion on the issue will be held in collaboration with other tribal student organisations on August 18 at Manipur Press Club.
