Three day training programme for CWC held

A three day training induction programme for Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Chairpersons and members, was launched at Tribal Research Institute conference hall, under the aegis of Social Welfare Department today.
Speaking at the event, Social Welfare Director Ngangom Uttam said that issues surrounding the children, are not taken seriously all over the country, including Manipur.
However, around 38-40 percent of the total population of the country is made up of those below the age of 18.As such, they should not be neglected.
It is difficult to handle the crimes related to the children and it is the responsibility of all to properly adhere to the laws and rules which have been designed to protect the children as well, he explained.
He explained that as per the JJ Act, every police station should have a child friendly unit and a child friendly police officer.
A child cannot be questioned by a uniformed police personnel and they should not be threatened or intimidated, he added, explaining that the Social Welfare Department and the Home Department are planning to provide necessary training to the designated police officers.
Speaking about adoption, the Director said that it will be better for a child to be adopted or raised by a family which desperately want a child, instead of keeping them in institutionalised centres like children homes.
He also spoke about Specialised Adoption Agencies and also stressed on the important roles played by CWC Chairpersons and Members.
Manipur Judicial Academy Lecturer N Brajakanta was also present as well.
The training programme will feature discussion among experts on JJ Act, POCSO Act, role of CWCs etc.
