Imphal, November 15 2015:
Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has threatened to boycott Inter-College Manipur University Youth Festival 2015 if the authorities fail to include MUSU under Manipur University Act 2005 by November 17 .
During an interaction with media persons at MU campus, MUSU President Sarangthem David said that MUSU has been demanding the university authorities to include MUSU under Manipur University Act 2005 since a long time but the authorities have failed to fulfill the demand.
A memorandum was also submitted to the MU Vice Chancellor on September 29 last demanding a response by November 7 last.
As per the instruction of the VC, the Union also met with the Dean of Students' Welfare on October 26 last.
Students staged sit-in protests in the last few months demanding the inclusion MUSU in University Act.
MUSU was banned by the University authority for around five years now but revived back after holding an election.
It is unreasonable that the authorities have excluded the union from the University Act and suppressed the students, said David.
Though a union, MUSU remains only a Students' Council in the Manipur University Act 2005 which leads to violation of students' rights.
In other Central Universities of India, Student Unions are included in their University Act, said David.
He further informed that MUSU's existence will not have any meaning if the University failed to include the union in its Act.
MU authority should include MUSU under the Manipur University Act 2005 by November 17 and if they fail to do the same, the Inter-College Manipur University Youth Festival 2015 which will be held from November 18 to 20 at the University will be boycotted, said David.
He warned that an intensified stir will be launched and called on students of all colleges in the State not to participate in the festival.
